On average puppies open their eyes 12 16 days after birth. But this is the average time so sometimes puppies may open their eyes a day or two earlier or later than that. Their hearing will keep on improving until the puppies are around eight weeks old. They will also go through several other developments after they are born.

Eye opening merely indicates that they have effectively put their blind stage behind. Puppies can see only blurry things at the initial stage as they open the eyes in between 10 14 days. When puppies are born their eyes are still developing. The puppy eyes are open but those are still immature.

They are capable of identifying movement and shapes at this time though not precisely or accurately. Their open eyes continue to develop for several more weeks. Puppies are delicate to open their eyes when they are born. It is only after birth that the optical nerves start to mature which leads to the puppies opening their eyes over a slow time frame.
